In today's healthcare, medical providers and facilities face potential liability on a regular basis. Legal and regulatory environments continue to change, and staying aware of what you need to know is an ongoing task that requires the right support. That’s where Copic can help. We draw upon our decades of experience to develop resources that help you make decisions on medical situations where legal issues may arise.
Our Legal team works closely with the physicians and nurses in our Patient Safety & Risk Management department to address your questions and concerns, and to proactively provide resources designed to help you prevent claims. Our goal is simple—share meaningful education so you can care for patients with confidence. Copic’s legal resources are made available through seminars, specialty publications, legislative advocacy, and more. And if you need support that falls outside of what is covered in your policy, we can refer you to our network of experienced attorneys for one-on-one consultation.
Copic's Legal Team stays on top of regulatory and legal issues that touch important aspects of healthcare. We are dedicated to keeping you informed and our scope of support focuses on the following key topics:
Throughout the year, we offer seminars that are held in-person and virtually. These cover updates to ongoing topics like HIPAA or clarify emerging issues like liability concerns with telehealth. Participation may apply toward a premium discount and also qualify for CME credits. Examples of popular seminars include:
One of our most popular programs, Copic’s Mock Trial offers an inside look at what actually happens during the courtroom proceedings of a medical liability trial. Hosted by a Copic attorney, it provides a reenactment of an actual trial that includes opening arguments, cross-examination of witnesses, and closing statements. The facts of the case are presented to participants who serve as jury members, and ultimately put forth a verdict after hearing testimony from the plaintiff, an expert witness, and the defendant. Upcoming virtual program dates include October 16. Contact [email protected] for more information.
Copic’s Legal team also works closely with our Public Affairs team to review legislation that has the potential to impact healthcare at the state level. Throughout the legislative sessions, we monitor and analyze bills to determine any actions that should be taken in coordination with other partners in healthcare. And if there are updates that result from legislation, we make sure to inform you about what you need to know to protect your medical practice and address any changes to how you approach patient care.
No. Copic works with outside defense counsel who are assigned to cases with our insureds. These attorneys are separate from our in-house Legal team, which focuses on education that supports our insureds and their efforts to enhance patient safety and risk management.
Minors and Risk is a booklet that helps medical providers understand and navigate legal issues they may encounter with patients who are minors. Examples of situations include parental rights around medical decisions, issues with divorced parents, situations when a minor can consent to medical care without parental consent, and child abuse and reporting.
Guide to Responding to Civil Subpoenas is a resource which includes a step-by-step checklist of key considerations when responding to a subpoena.
