Real World Innovations: Practical Design Thinking in Healthcare

Speaker:

Kristian Olson, MD, MPH; Mass General Brigham / Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School

Real-world innovations in healthcare are centered around improving patient outcomes, efficiency, and accessibility. These innovations aim to make healthcare more personalized, proactive, and cost effective.

Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare: Same Great Flavor You Have Come to Expect from Regular Intelligence Without Those Unwanted Calories!

Speaker:

Eric Zacharias, MD; Copic

David Whitling, MD; Boulder Community Hospital

Clinical, social, and administrative applications empowered by Artificial Intelligence, particularly those using “Generative Language Models” (like ChatGPT), are being increasingly marketed to and adopted in medical practices and health facilities. These augment other AI-empowered applications for clinical decision support, communications, image processing, document handling, etc. The benefits and risks, particularly patient safety and professional liability implications of these systems are only beginning to be discovered. Copic, as a professional liability insurer and patient safety organization is intensely interested in understanding how AI-enabled software and devices will impact best practices in the near and intermediate future. While many practitioners are becoming exposed to marketing and scientific literature related to AI in medicine, many do not have sufficient background in informatics and technology risk assessment to allow them to evaluate these systems or implement them knowledgeably. Through literature review and expert interviews Copic’s risk managers and legal department have identified technological mechanisms, existing legal principles and potential new hazards that can foreseeably become important in preventing adverse events and defending liability claims related to AI. They have also been following the progress of new regulatory proposals that will impact AI users.

3:45—4:45pm

Legislative Impacts on Healthcare Delivery

Speaker:

Beverly Razon; Copic

Healthcare is required to be in compliance with the Federal and State laws and regulations. These laws and regulations can be changed by legislators, courts, and ballots. Increasingly, we are seeing all three venues used to make, change, or overturn current law. Copic monitors each of these venues to identify efforts that may impact the physician-patient relationship, impede or enhance learning in health care delivery, support or stifle patient safety, or create any unreasonable burdens that may lead to new torts. Attendees will learn about trends we are seeing, challenges we are navigating or anticipating, and what may be ahead.
